If you failed to file your tax return on time or failed to pay your tax on time, there are failure penalties from the IRS. They are basically 5% of the monies owed for each month or part of each month you are late. They cap the penalties at 25% of the monies owed. It’s best to file on time and even if you file an extension, you’ll need to pay your tax on time.
