This study of how rising interest rates are affecting bank stability has concluded that over 180 banks are likely to go under. As bank assets erode due to higher interest rates coupled with the flight of cash to the big banks, there is a real possibility more will go under.

Unclaimed.org is a site through which you can look up your name and see if you have any unclaimed property or monies that are owed to you. Check it out. I actually found some unclaimed money for myself. Weird, I know.

News reports are now suggesting the Federal government will run out of money by June 1, meaning that the Treasury will need to decide which bills to pay first and which vendors to stretch just a bit. If I suggested they stretch the salaries and benefits of the members of Congress and the President, would you blame me? Anyways, Wharton has published a nice evaluation of the reason the government is running out of money much faster than anticipated even a few months ago: lower than anticipated tax receipts. They break down where the gaps are and explain our current situation. From a Christian Stewardship viewpoint, our country is making two fundamental mistakes in how we manage money. First, we’re borrowing just to meet current obligations. I believe we should either reduce raw spending or raise taxes or both. But we shouldn’t be borrowing to meet current obligations. Second, I believe our government should have a cash reserve – like a rainy day fund – from which we can draw in the event of an emergency. We have neither and this is not good.

By the way, can you imagine the panic in our country if 180 banks go belly up while the government runs out of money? Would this be God’s judgment on us or just the result of decades of foolish decisions?

Leadership Books is having a one-day authors summit in Orlando on May 22. They are charging $400 to attend plus you have to pay for your travel and accomodations. The promoters market this summit as the “number one publishing event for business and ministry leaders.” What they promise to give you could be found largly for free on the KDP publishing site at Amazon. And I’ll be you dollars to donuts that their one-day event is little more than a one-day sales pitch to purchase their customized, individualized consulting for thousands of dollars. I’ve authored 18 books since 2000. This event dowsn’t pass the smell test for me.

Mass shootings are nearly a daily occurance in our country now. Often referred to as “gun violence,” this phenomena is becoming part of daily American life. Many see this problem as one of hardware: get rid of the guns. I see it as a problem of man’s heart: “Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold” (Matthew 24:12 NIV). The increase in mass shootings is a problem of the heart, not the gun. As we move farther and farther away from God and his laws, we will see an increase in violence and confusion. Mass shootings combine both: confused (mostly) men steeped in sin conclude that killing others is the answer to their problem. We need a revivial in this country in the worst way. If not now, when? If not me, who? Let’s commit ourselves to unreservedly following Christ, regardless of the cost.
