Originally aired on January 16, 2019 with Peter Kapsner on Faith Radio, Bill discusses the partial government shutdown as well as passages from Ecclesiastes 5.
We discuss the myth of financial security as a result of our discussion of Ecclesiastes 5. We also discuss how to manage the interaction of wealth and friendships.
Show Notes:
What can learn about stewardship from Ecc 5?
- If you love money and
wealth, you’ll never have enough. (vss
10-11)
- Money, power and sex – all three are constant cravings which can be reigned in only by the transforming power of the Holy Spirit
- You can become addicted to the pursuit of money and wealth
- Contentment comes from wanting what you already have – but a love for money always produces a discontented person
- Wealth can attract human
leeches (vs 11), who give the rich man no peace.
- This is true in Christian circles too – wealthy Christians are pestered by numerous Christian organizations who all need money
- Wealth can be hoarded and
actually harm the owner (vs 13). It
harms by:
- Becoming unproductive (ala Luke 19)
- Becoming a pre-occupation by the owner (does not focus on God’s purposes for business, but on the wealth itself – for example, keeping it safe)
- Becoming lost – examples: theft, fire, government action
- What is good and proper?
(vss 18-20)
- Find satisfaction in one’s labor
- When God gives us wealth – be content with it and enjoy it – this is a gift from God
- We don’t worry when we’re content and we enjoy the wealth God has given us
