Article: the Emotional price Owners Pay When Their Business is Failing

This article is featured in the new slider I built over the weekend.

Hook:  Business Owners pay a huge, emotional price when their business is failing.  This also applies to churches, non-profits and individuals when they are facing significant, financial stress.  When organizations or individuals are looking at bankruptcy, the emotions they experience are deep, personal and significant.

Core talking points:

  1. Most business owners will face financial ruin at one time or another.  Most ministries will also face this at some point if they are going to grow.
    1. Remember: no significant ministry without significant risk
  2. Secret emotions:  this is true for business owners, ministry leaders and individuals:
    1. Wake up at night and their mind is racing about the impending dangers and you can’t shut down your mind
    1. Constant anxiety and sometimes, panic attacks = Entrepreneurial Terror
    1. Significant fear
    1. Reputational worries
      1. Will my spouse leave me?
      1. What will people think?
      1. What will I do next?
    1. Over time à despair
  3. On the outside:
    1. Calm
    1. Positive
    1. Upbeat
    1. Showing no weakness
    1. Yet, you are
      1. Repressed
      1. Compartmentalized
  4. Why are they failing financially?
    1. Don’t understand their use of cash
    1. Not so much about a budget as it is about knowing when cash comes in and when/where it goes out
      1. You can only spend a dollar once
  5. Difficulties in shutting down an organization
    1. Paying off vendors
    1. Negotiating end to contracts such as printer or phone system leases
    1. Finding cash to meet payroll while shutting down
    1. Sometimes: the owner’s/leader’s moral obligations to stay in the business/ministry propels them to keep going when it is emotionally unattractive to stay in it – furthering the depth and severity of emotional drain and mental strain on them personally
  6. What Can be done?
    1. Churches should develop financial and supportive ministries to individuals, ministry leaders and business leaders
    1. Need a confidential place to talk where they won’t be blamed
    1. Need outside assistance in getting their business/ministry to a healthy point
    1. Leaders must humble themselves and be willing to ask for help
    1. Limit personal, financial exposure to the ministry or business
    1. Maintain good work/life balance – a failing business or ministry can suck you under if you’re not careful
    1. Do not try to solve the entire problem with one decision.
      1. Make incremental, numerous decisions that fix what you can fix today and enable you to live another day.
    1. Spouses experience failure differently than the owner/leader.
      1. Anger
      1. Hurt
      1. Frustration
      1. Resentment
      1. Why didn’t you listen to me?
      1. Lonliness
      1. Feel out of control
      1. Loss of security
      1. Question the abilities of his/her spouse
      1. Shut down emotionally
      1. Need similar support
